In the studio with Gypsy Pistoleros

Saturday, June 13, 2009

I had my first experience of life in a recording studio yesterday, when I took up an invitation to visit Gypsy Pistoleros who are in the process of recording Welcome to the Hotel de la Meurte with producer Joe Gibb (Jane's Addiction, The Kinks, Funeral for a Friend, etc) at Mighty Atom Studios in the depths of the south Wales countryside.
The studio is really not what I was expecting, sited as it is within an historic farmhouse up a fairly rough farm lane, but as a place for bands to stay and record it is great. Slate floors, beams in the bedrooms upstairs, open fire in the main room, fabulous views and a compact little kitchen - hell, I wouldn't mind living there!
When I arrived, Lee and Denny were relaxing in the main room while Iggie was holed up in the studio itself with Joe. Denny's drums had been recorded elsewhere earlier in the week so he was giving serious concentration to victory at football on the Xbox. Lee gave me the lowdown on how the first week had been going: it seems that Joe is a hard taskmaster, determined to get the best possible results out of the band. If you're not giving your best he doesn't mince his words! But all in all they were pleased with how it was going, with another week still to go.
The studio eventually fell silent, the door opened and the man himself emerged, with Iggie grabbing a couple of cans of lager and immediately heading outside to catch up on some smoking. Joe seems like a really good guy, very direct and down to earth, and after a short break I got to see him in action while Lee laid down some vocals.
Bearing in mind I have absolutely no idea how anything in a studio works, it was very impressive watching him and the instrumentals were sounding really tight as Lee added his parts over the top. After an hour or so working on it, when everyone had expressed their satisfaction (Lee was particularly concerned about getting the Spanish pronunciation right in a fast section of the track) Joe ran off a rough cut CD of two of the tracks and I got a listen. Lee had sent me the demos a couple of weeks ago, and let me tell you, even as a rough cut Joe's work was streets ahead. The title track is killer - I can't wait to see what Joe does with it for the final version.
The guys have the weekend off and will be back in the studio again next week. My first exposure to a recording studio was fascinating, although the round trip to south Wales and back in one day was knackering, and I am looking forward to the Pistoleros' second album even more than I already was.
